The K Series offers several gearbox options which can be embodied into the Scorpion III. Since the launch of the K1200, a six-speed box has been available - as has a five-speed box with BMW's electric 'Back Up System'. These gearboxes can only be specified with a 1200 type chassis.
The pre-1200 five-speed box is also available, but carries the rear suspension on the back of its casing. The later gearboxes require the rear suspension to be chassis mounted, so pre and post 1200 gearboxes are not interchangeable. The later system offers more rigidity, but the earlier type performs perfectly well.
Note: We offer a larger wheel and tyre on the 1200 type chassis: 7.5in x 16in with 205-50-16 tyre.
The choices of gearbox are: 6-speed (using 1200 type chassis only) 5-speed (using 1200 type chassis only) or 5-speed pre-1200.
BMW bikes use a single dry plate, car-like clutch. We offer an up-rated all metal unit that gives very long life. This was initially developed because the standard BMW clutch in a Scorpion was prone to early failure. This is no longer true of the latest specification standard units - provided that they are not abused. However, the Grinnall all-metal alternative remains a recommended option.
Operation of the clutch is cable on the pre 1200 models, and hydraulic on the post 1200 models.
Front suspension: Double wishbones in oval tubing with inboard concentric coil springs and dampers. Anti-roll bar. Optional adjustable dampers.
Rear suspension: BMW Para-lever (early 8-valve models use Mono-lever). Concentric coil spring and adjustable damper standard.
Front brakes: Girling single piston sliding calipers with hand brake. Optional AP racing opposed twin-piston alloy callipers with Brembo mechanical rear handbrake.
Rear brake: BMW K-series 290mm disc, twin opposed piston non-floating calliper.
Aluminium race type, centre pinion 2.5 turns lock to lock. Right or left-hand drive. Collapsible safety steering column.
Wheels and Tyres
Front: Cast aluminium 7x15 with 195/50 ZR15 tyres.
Rear: Aluminium 3 piece split rim 7.5x15 with 195/55 ZR15 tyre (pre 1200 model) or 7.5x16 with 205/50 ZR16 tyre (for 1200cc model only).
Bridgestone tyres are recommended.
